Profile

Tony Coates has 27 years experience in Psychotherapy and Psychiatry.
Seventeen years ago, out of the concern for the many conflicts faced by his clients he began an international study of how the language each of us uses, influences the feelings and choices we make in our daily lives.

He found truth in the statement:
“Words do not label things already there. Words are like the chisel of the carver: they free the idea, the thing, from the general formlessness of the outside. As a man speaks, not only is his language in a state of birth, but also the very thing about which he is talking.”
(Eskimo Quote)

He also found that this approach gave direct access to the heart and spirit of the concerns brought about by living in our society and as well as providing a path of action for individual fulfilment.
His interest is also in Group Psychotherapy where he works with his colleague and co-therapist, Tiina Power. For 9 years we have been running a weekly psychotherapy group for people who have been hospitalised with Major Mental Disorders in Auckland’s Western suburbs.

He is a Registered Medical Practitioner and a member of the New Zealand Association of Psychotherapists. He has worked in organisational change management, occupational health, debriefing, stress management, and physical disability. He also has credentials in Therapeutic Supervision and Professional Coaching.

His philosophical position and spiritual approach is Advaita(non dual).
